Long pepper in botanical name is piper longum or Thippali in India. Long Pepper is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit, which is usually dried and used as a spices and seasoning. Long pepper has a taste hotter. Long pepper process of pick up in the farm and drying usually done by natural sun drying. The fruit of the pepper consists of many minuscule fruits each about the size of a poppy seed embedded in the surface of a flower spike that closely resembles a hazel tree catkin. The fruits contain the alkaloid piperine, which contributes to their pungency.



Long pepper used to improve appetite and digestion, as well as treat stomachache, heartburn, indigestion, intestinal gas, diarrhea, and cholera. It is also used for lung problems including asthma, bronchitis, and cough. Other uses include treatment of headache, toothache, vitamin B1 deficiency (beriberi), coma, epilepsy, fever, stroke, trouble sleeping (insomnia), leprosy, extreme tiredness, enlarged spleen, muscle pain, nasal discharge, paralysis, psoriasis, intestinal worms, snakebites, tetanus, thirst, tuberculosis, and tumors. In India, long pepper is being used by women to regulate menstrual flow, help the uterus return to the normal size following childbirth and to treat other problems of sexual origin including infertility, cramps and loss of libido to interest in sexual activity and many more.
