Curcuma zanthorrhiza, known as temulawak, Java ginger, Javanese ginger, or Javanese turmeric is a plant species, belonging to the ginger family. The scientific name is sometimes written as Curcuma xanthorrhiza, but this is an orthographical variant. This plant originated from Indonesia, more specifically from Java island, out of which it spread to several places in the biogeographical region Southeast Asian. Currently, most of the temulawak is cultivated in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines. Outside of South East Asia, cultivars may be found also in China, Indochina, India, etc.
Traditionally, Curcuma xanthorrhiza have been greatly harnessed all over its local distribution area as an ingredient of Jamu (Indonesian herbal supplement and medicine) or to medicate and control numerous of sickness and disorders since ancient time including lack of appetite, stomach illness, liver ailments, constipation, bloody diarrhea, dysentery, arthritis, children’s fevers, hypotriglyceridemic, hemorrhoids, vaginal discharge, rheumatism, and skin eruptions.
